Product show: Optical Power Meter

An optical power meter is an instrument used to measure absolute optical power or relative loss of optical power through a length of optical fiber. In fiber optic systems, measuring optical power is the most basic, much like a multimeter in electronics; in fiber optic measurements, optical power meters are heavy-duty common meters. By measuring the absolute power of the transmitter or optical network, an optical power meter can evaluate the performance of the optical equipment. Using an optical power meter in combination with a stable source, it is possible to measure connection loss, verify continuity, and help evaluate fiber link transmission quality.

Types of optical power meter:

1. Common optical power meter: FPM100 is an economical optical power meter designed by TARLUZ, especially for field engineer for installing and maintaining fiber optic network. It could work with FLS100 Series Optical Light Source to test insertion loss of optical network. It can support  850, 980, 1300, 1310, 1490, 1550nm with compact size and easy to carry, for single mode and multimode fiber cable

2. PON optical meter: As the industry’s advanced PON-specific power meter, PPM300 PON Power Meter is the flagship of TARLUZ line of testing instruments specifically intended for FTTH and FTTP systems. It is the ideal tool for FTTH/FTTP service activation and troubleshooting. It support 1310/1490/1550nm simultaneously testing, Quick, on-site test and measurement of PON signals, anywhere on the network. Fault identification and isolation.

3. CWDM power meter: CFPM1000A CWDM Power Meter is specially designed for CWDM transmission network. It is capable of measures and monitors optical power and attenuation value of 18 channels from wavelength 1270nm to 1610nm wavelength. All calibrated wavelengths will be tested simultaneously and all test results will show in the LCD screen. This CWDM power meter features simple operation, quick response and high measurement accuracy which make it an ideal tester in CWDM system installation and maintenance.

4. MPO optical power meter: TL3224 MPO/MTP Optical Power Meter and TL3124 MPO/MTP Optical Light Source is an Optical Test Solutions especially designed for Data Center on site testing. The MPO/MTP Optical Power Meter and MPO/MTP Optical Light Source could be applied in pair to test the insertion loss for MPO/MTP Patch Cord Insertion Loss, Polarity Condition, etc. it support data storage, threshold analysis as well as data uploading, is much more efficient compared with traditional light source and power meter. It is indispensable for data center application.

How to select an optical power meter?

Application: Optical power meter can test the absolute optical power in normal fiber optic link and fiber optic devices. However, there are also optical power meters which are designed for special applications, like PON optical power meter and CWDM optical power meter, which can provide fast and easier power measurement for the corresponding applications.

Wavelength Range and Calibrated Wavelengths: Every optical power meter supports a certain range of wavelengths, which are usually ranging from 800nm to 1700nm. If more accurate optical power value is required, it is suggested to calibrate the power meter to the same wavelengths that the devices are running one before testing the optical power. The most commonly used wavelengths are 850nm, 1310nm, 1550nm, etc. Thus, both the supported wavelength range and calibrated wavelengths should be considered.

Measurement Range: The certain range of optical power that an optical power meter can test should also be considered. Generally, the optical power that optical power meter can measure is ranging from -70dBm to +30dBm.

Interface Type: A length of fiber patch cable is usually used to connect the port on optical power meter with the corresponding port of devices for fiber optic testing. The optical adapter interfaces on the optical power meters could be fixed ones. For instance, many optical power meter usually has just one FC adapter. In case you don’t have the patch cords terminated with the corresponding fiber optic connector, optical power meters equipped with several replaceable adapters are also available.
